PRAYER FOR THE
NEGRO.
---------------
IT is our duty ever
to "remember them that are in bonds as bound with
them." Let us prove that we do remember
them, by endeavouring to do something towards
rescuing so many unhappy beings from the miserable
thraldom to which they have long been subjected by
slavery. Let us not rest satisfied until the
doors of the prison-house of bondage are broken
down, liberty to the captive is effected, and "the
oppressed go free!" until "the princes shall
come forth from Egypt, and Dthiopia stretch out her
hand unto God!"
May the fervent prayers of all those who are interested
in the welfare of their fellow-men, and sympathize
with the suffering African, ascend to the throne of
heaven. It is the all-wise and all-merciful
Disposer of events, the Lord Omnipotent alone, that
can bless our efforts, and He will assuredly crown
them with success, if we place our full confidence
in Him, and faint not. To His name he ascribed
all the praise and all the glory!
JESUS! from thy
dwelling-place,
Look on Afric's captive race;
While their bitter groans ascend,
Let thy willing ear attend;
Thou who never didst deny
Pity to the mourner's cry,
Hear the prayer we send to Thee,
Set the injured negro free.
Lo! in faith we turn to Thee,
Set the injured negro free. |
"Let the sighing of the prisoner come before Thee;
according to the greatness of thy power preserve
them that are appointed to die." - Psal. 1xxix. 11.
