*It
may be worthy of mention, that a stray bullet, carelessly fired
from the camp of the 44th Cincinnati Volunteers, struck the
shovel from this man's hands, passing directly through the broad
part of the shovel handle, and within a few inches of his head.
The brave fellow never flinched, but gaily proceeded with his
day's work, as if he enjoyed the smelling of gunpowder. |

*** This worthy man was
accidentally killed. A large tree he had nearly chopped
down in clearing obstructions from before the guns of Fort
Shaler, swayed by the wind, fell upon and crushed him, a day or
two only before the colored men were relieved from duty; after
their return to Cincinnati he was buried by his late companions
and the officers of the Black Brigade - much honored and
lamented. |
