Long Point Cemetery, located
1-1/2 miles South of Niantic on Section 23, Niantic
Township, takes its name from a point of timber that jutted
out on the Prairie from the Sangamon River.
In an earlier day the
surrounding country, for some distance, was known as Long
Point Settlement. The first saw mill, a circular saw,
run by eight horses, and the Long Point Stage Stop, located
in the near vicinity, was run by a very early settler, Mr.
James Dingaman.
Many pioneers of Long Point
Settlement, later known as Niantic Township, are buried in
this old cemetery. There are unmarked graves, for
which records are no longer extant, as yeas ago vandals
removed some markers and in some instances graves were not
recorded on the plot record.
Until recently beautiful
evergreen Arbor Vita hedges bordered the six sections of the
cemetery.
Land has been purchased and
sown to grass along the east side to enlarge the grounds.
Very early Campbellites held
services in the open air or under the shade of trees and
sometimes in Mr. Dingman's log home, until a neat, plain,
little church or meeting house was built in the grove near
Mr. Dingman's and near the neighborhood grave yard.
The church was later moved into the cemetery. The
Christian Churches of Illiopolis, Harristown, Niantic and
Berea have developed from the congregation of this early
country church. A plaque above the entrance has this
inscription.
"This House was built by the Church of Christ A.D. 1856
In which no instrumental music shall be used to worship God.
