Muirhead Cemetery
RECORDS
William Muirhead was
born in Rockingham County, Virginia, migrating to Macon County,
Illinois in 1830 where he settled at Wykles Place, four miles west
of Decatur.
The 1891 plat book of
Macon County shows W. T. Muirhead owning 159 acres in Section 33 of
Blue Mound Township. The cemetery is located in that section
straight west of the Brown Cemetery( located in Section 34).
There is no road to this small forgotten graveyard. Permission
for admission to the land must be obtained from the man whose house
is located just south of the Brown Cemetery. If permission is
granted, you must climb over fences and walk through the farmer's
feeding lots and pasture about one-half mile.
Muirhead Cemetery, a
once favorable burial ground for veterans, has passed into disuse.
The last burial was in 1898 and was transferred to the Blue Mound
Township in the 1940s, although at present it doesn't seem to be in
anyone's care.
A copton under a picture
of the Muirhead Cemetery, which appeared in the Sunday Decatur
Herald and Review, June 7, 1964 reads: "The weeds grew as the
plot thickened". This is still true today.
I have added notes here and there to other links
so please watch for them. ~ Sharon
