William Barnes originally
purchased this land between
December 1833 and January 1836.
It is hard to pinpoint the exact
location as it is not shown on
any plat books. Except for
the efforts of Archie Lilly,
this small burial ground might
have been destroyed by the
building of I 72, as it was to
pass over this site. Some
stones have reportedly been
removed from the cemetery.
A letter from Ralph Bushee,
Jr. states that in a letter to
his mother (Bessie Fitzwater
Bushee from Mary Lena Barnes of
Eureka Springs, Ark. dated 13
Oct. 1932. in tips mentions
these people as being buried at
the cemetery.)
(Wm. Harrison Barnes) father,
mother, sister Ann and I think a
baby sister-my father's father,
Andrew (Meyer) Barnes and one or
two others." In research
done by Ralph he relates that
the Woolington name came to the
cemetery because Susannah Barnes
(daughter of William and Sarah
Marquiss Barnes married a
Woolington.) Her first
husband was Nicholas Devore, who
is buried in the cemetery.
Susannah is buried in the Dewit
County Barnes Cemetery.
NOTE: The
following was found in the
Illinois State Archives
database:
Devore, Nicholas H. & Barnes,
Susannah were married on Nov.
22, 1835 at Macon County,
Illinois.
Woolington, John & Devore,
Susanna were married on Aug. 14,
1849 - Vol. A, Page 4 in Piatt
County, Illinois.
