SERVED AT STATE HOUSE MANY YEARS
The funeral of George Reed Russell of Woburn,
for years in the office of the adjutant-general as
chief clerk for the inspector-general of rifle
practice, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30
from the residence of his son, Prof. George E.
Russell of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, at 191 Park avenue, Arlington Heights.
Mr. Russell, who died on Saturday at the home of
his son, was born in Woburn Jan. 31, 1844, the son
of Samuel W. and Susan Adams Russell.
He was a member of the class of 1865 at Harvard.
In 1870 he moved to Boston, and the next year
married Emma A. Edmond of Woburn, who died in
1883. For a time he was engaged in the
wholesale market produce business, and gave it up to
become an ammunition maker. Then he entered
the militia, as a member of the old G Company, fifth
regiment, known as the Woburn Phalanx. He
became first lieutenant in this company; then joined
the first regiment of heavy artillery in Boston,
later the first, corps of coast artillery, and until
a few years ago he was its paymaster sergeant.
He served in the Spanish war.
He was a member of Camp Maloy, U. S. W. V., of Woburn;
head belonged to the Odd Fellows; and was a member
of the First Baptist Church of Woburn. Besides
his son he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Winifred W.
Thurber, of Washington, D. C.; sister, Miss
Susan A. Russell, with whom he had lived in
Woburn; and two brothers, Charles Herbert Russellof
Westboro and Edward A. Russell of Hamilton. |

Ex-Mayor of
Woburn, Dies
WOBURN, Feb. 13 -
Ex-Mayor Harold P.
Johnson, 59, of Arlington road,
vice-president of the Woburn National Bank and son
of hte late Judge
Edward F. Johnson, first mayor of Woburn,
died at his home this morning.
Law Instructor
Mr. Johnson was vice-president of the Conveyancers'
Association, trustee of Choate Memorial Hospital,
president of Woburn Public Library trustees, and a
member of the law firm of Johnson and Johnson.
He was an instructor at Northeastern University Law
School and during the first world war, was a member
of the legal advisory board and appeal agent for the
draft board. While at college he was assistant
editor of the Harvard Crimson and served on the
board of managers.
He was a member of Delta Upsilon, Pudding Stone,
Rotary, Towanda and Middlesex clubs, Woburn Lodge of
Elks, and the Republican Club of Massachusetts.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marion D. Luey
four children, Lt. Kendall L., Camp Edwards;
Dexter B., vice president and cashier of Woburn
National Bank;Mrs. JAmes B. Bell of South Orange, N.
J., and Sgt. Edward F., a member of the Royal
Canadian Air Force, attached to the Royal Air Force
in England; a brother, Kenneth S., of South
Orange; a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Hern of
Woburn and seven grandchildren.
