State of Maine |
The State of Maine is divided into sixteen counties, a
civil division for political purposes.
In order to know where records are located, particularly
early records, it is necessary to known when the counties
were formed and the parent county or counties.

YORK (County Seat - Afred) included the entire State to June 19,
1760, when Cumberland and Lincoln were set off. |
|
CUMBERLAND (County Seat - Portland) had part of its land set off
to Kennebec, February 20, 1799; to Oxford, March 4, 1805; and to
Androscoggin, March 18, 1854. |

LINCOLN (County Seat - Wiscassett) had part of its land set off
to Washington June 25, 1789; to Hancock, June 25, 1789; to
Kennebec, February 20, 1799; to Androscoggin, March 18, 1854; to
Sagadahoc, April 4, 1854; and to Knox, March 5, 1860. |

HANCOCK (County Seat - Ellsworth) was set off from Lincoln, June
25, 1789. |

WASHINGTON (County Seat - Machias) was formed from
Lincoln, June 25, 1789. Part of its land was set off to
Aroostook, March 16, 1829. |

KENNEBEC (County Seat - Augusta) was formed from Cumberland and
Lincoln Counties, Feb. 20, 1799. Part of its land was set
off to Franklin, March 20, 1838; and part to Androscoggin, March
18, 1854.

OXFORD (County Seat - South Paris) was formed from York and
Cumberland, March 4, 1805. Part was set off to Franklin,
March 20, 1838 and part to Androscoggin, March 18, 1854. |

SOMERSET (County Seat - Skoohegan) was formed from Kennebec,
March 1, 1809. Part was set off to Franklin, March 20,
1838; to Piscataquis, March 23, 1838; and to Aroostook, March
12, 1844. |

PENOBSCOT (County Seat - Bangor) was formed from Hancock,
February 15, 1816. Part was set off to Piscataquis, 23
March 1838; to Aroostook, March 16, 1839; and to Aroostook,
March 21, 1843. |

WALDO (County Seat - Belfast) was formed from Hancock, February
7, 1827, Part was set off to Knox, 5 March 1860. |
|
FRANKLIN (County Seat - Farmington) was formed from Kennebec,
Oxford and Somerset, March 20, 1838. |
|
PISCATAQUIS (County Seat - Dover-Foxcroft) was formed from
Penobscot and Somerset, 23 March 1838. Part was set off to
Aroostook, 12 March 1844. |

AROOSTOOK (County Seat - Houlton) was formed from Penobscot and
Washington, March 16, 1839. Part of Penobscot annexed, 21
March 1843; part of Piscataquis annexed, March 12, 1844; and
part of Somerset annexed, March 12, 1844. |

ANDROSCOGGIN, (County Seat - Auburn) was formed from Cumberland,
Oxford, Kennebec and Lincoln, 18 March 1854. |

SAGADAHOC (County Seat - Bath) was formed from Lincoln, April 4,
1854.

KNOX (County Seat - Rockland) was formed from Lincoln and Waldo,
March 5, 1860. |
