THOMAS THOMAS SURRENDERS.
IN JAIL CHARGED WITH CAUSING THE DEATH OF EDWARD JAMES.
James Got Into Thomas' Shirt and Socks, Which Started a Quarrel
- Thomas Struck James With his Bare Fist - Didn't Know He Was
Badly Hurt.
Thomas Thomas is in jail charged with causing the
death of Edward James, which occurred in the Allegheny
hospital Thursday. Thomas came to the mayor's
office Saturday, after ascertaining he was wanted on the charge
of causing the death of James, and surrendered himself
into the custody of the police. He was committed to jail.
Thomas is a middle aged Welshman who has been employed at
the Lalance-Grosjean manufacturing plant above this city.
He boarded with Mrs. Barnes at the corner of Sixth and
Maclay streets.
On March 12, Edward James, of Leechburg, a
workman in one of the western iron mills, came to Mr. Barnes'
boarding house. That night he and Thomas slept in
the same room. The next morning the two men quarreled over
their wearing apparel which, it is supposed, got mixed during
the night. Thomas said James was putting on
one of his (Thomas') socks, when the Allegheny workman
was told about it. Shortly after that Thomas said:
"I saw the man put on my shirt. I spoke to him again
about it and he denied that it was mine. We had some cross
words and I dealt him a blow with my bare fist, but did not
consider it a fatal blow, because he left the city that night
for his home in Pittsburg."
The police officials said last night that they didn't
know when Thomas would be given a hearing.
Information from Pittsburg stated that James' death was
due to injuries received about the throat and chest. The
publication in THE PATRIOT of the charge made against Thomas
Thomas brought several persons of that name of this city to
the authorities to inquire concerning the identity of the
accused and circumstances under which James came to his
death. Thomas' manner in surrendering himself to
the authorities showed that he was totally unaware of the fatal
injuries he is charged with inflicting upon James.
Employees of the Lelance-Grosjesn works who are
familiar with both men said that Thomas was well liked
among the men. On the contrary James is reported as
having at times drank alcohol and water and when that was not
obtainable he would drink other powerful mixtures which it is
said were sufficient to prove disastrous to more delicate
stomachs. Thomas told several of his friends that
he only struck James one blow and that he didn't appear
to be hurt at the time. The men at the works don't believe
he died from the injuries inflicted by Thomas. |
