"Wherever the Scotch-Irishman went, one of his
first efforts, after locating, was to secure the
stated preaching of the gospel, and by the year
1740 Presbyterian Churches were found dotted
over the broad bosom of this valley, almost
invariably in a grove of shady trees, and near a
spring of pure crystal water."
"Their pews of unpainted pine
straight-backed and tall;
Their gal'ries mounted high,
three sides around;
Their pulpits goblet-shaped,
half up the wall;
With sounding-board above,
with acorn crowned."

THE WHITE CHURCH
GRAVEYARD
Churches of the Valley By the Rev. Alfred Nevin
pg. 269
Among the first objects which claimed the
attention of the early settlers in their new
home, was the organization of a Church according
to the faith of their fathers. This took
place, A. D. 1738, and was styled, "Upper West
Conococheague," which covered about fourteen
miles square. The two most prominent
places selected were, the one, near what is now
known by the name of Waddell's Graveyard, and
which was then opened for interments in
anticipation of the building being erected
there, and the other the place where it now
stands. In a spirit of compromise, and as
being the most central and eligible, the latter
place was chosen. |
