  LOUIS D. MONTGOMERY, a farmer and stock-raiser of Johnson county, was born in Dubuque county, Iowa, Oct. 23, 1839, a son of Nathaniel Montgomery who was born in Virginia in 1802.  The latter moved to Illinois in an early day, later to St. Louis, Missouri, and next to Dubuque county, Iowa, where he was engaged in lead mines.  He also followed farming, and died in the field where he was plowing in 1845.  Mr. Montgomery married Miss Nancy Upton, a daughter of David and Margaret (Carmichael) Upton, viz.: William, Amanda, Samuel J., Lucinda, Joe N., Louis D., Louisa, Jane, Caroline, Mary A., Mahala and Susan.

, our subject, began life for himself as a farmer in Macoupin and Green counties, Illinois, and in 1866 removed to Newton county, Missouri thence to Carleton, Carroll county, Missouri, next to Dallas county, Texas, and in 1870 to Johnson county.  He settled on his present farm of 700 acres, 160 acres of which is under a fine state of cultivation.  Mr. Montgomery has served as School Director and Trustee, was vice-president of the Farmer's Alliance five years, and is now an elder in the Presbyterian Church.  Feb. 16, 1865, he enlisted in the Federal army, in Company I, One Hundred and Fifty-second Illinois Volunteer Infantry, under Colonel Stevenson and Captain Brown.
     Mr. Montgomery
was married Jan. 23, 1863, to Miss _____ Hamilton, a daughter of John and Caroline (Pyett) HamiltonMr. and Mrs. Montgomery have had seven children, as follows:  Lieuela, Arthur M., Minnie B., Jennie, Willie, Katie and Joe.
