FREDERICK BASTIAN, section 36, Adams Township,
was born in Alsace, France, June 16, 1839. When he was an
infant his father, Charles Bastian, died, and his mother
afterward married Louis Stauffer, who brought the family to
America in 1845, settling in Northville Township, where he resided
many years. Our subject subsequently settled in Adams
Township, where he remained three years, after which he lived to
Serena Township for seven years, when he returned to Adams Township,
where he has since been engaged in farming and stock-raising.
He has been successful in his agricultural pursuits, and now has a
fine farm containing 156 acres. He was married Feb. 18, 1862,
to Magdelena Girolt, and of the eight children born to them
six are living - Caroline, Libbie, Ella, Daniel, William and
