SKETCHES OF PARIS

CHAPTER VIII.
Pages 46 -

Reserving for some future time, the further sketches of Paris and her many noted men, we must draw these few disconnected facts to a close, but not, however, until we make due acknowledgement to those who have placed us under obligations.  We are especially grateful to County Clerk J. M. Hughes; Circuit Clerk Jas. E. Paton, and Deputy Circuit Clerk M. M. Miller; City Clerk, James Paton, the ministers of the various churches, J. G. Craddock, E. O. Fothergill and J. W. Hite of the True Kentuckian; John McCarney, Esq., E. T. Porter and H. D. Alexander, of the Saturday Night; Judge Hawes, W. H. McMillan, Col. Wm. Wright, John Hildreth, Elds. Jno. A. Gano and Aylett Raines, Mrs. B. E. Knapp, Wm. Allison, Sr., Messrs, McChesney & Johnson, A. Shire, H. F. Logan, A. J. Lovely.  Mrs. Kitty Brown, B. F. Harris, Geo. W. Davis, Gray Smith, R. J. Brown, C. T. Delling.
To James McCann, Esq., we are more than indebted, not only for the "Sketch of Paris in 1805," but for a great many other of the most valuable facts contained in this pamphlet.  Mr. McCann is now in his 76th year, has lived in Paris since he was six months old, and being a man of close observation, he has a vivid recollection of the greater part of Paris' history.  His memory is astonishingly good, and he is very fond of discoursing upon the events of the past.  He was born near this city, December 20th, 1800.

VALUATION OF PROPERTY AND POPULATION OF PARIS AT VARIOUS PERIODS.

     In 1790, she had 358 inhabitants; in 1800, 377; in 1840, 838; in 1820, ____; in 1830, 1,219; in 1840, 1,197; in 1850, ___; in 1860, 1,440; in 1870, 2,917; in 1876, near 5,000.
In 1810, the valuation of town property was $128,745, at 12¼ cents on $100, and 169 levys at 25 cents, yielded a total tax of $199.996.  In 1875, the total valuation was $1,423,910; at 85 cents on the $100, with 803 levys at $2.00, yielded a total tax of $13,294.41.
