HENRY
VANDERSLICE, son of Anthony Vanderslice
and Martha Pannebecker, was born Mar.
9, 1726, in Providence township, then Philadelphia, now
Montgomery County, where he was brought up as a miller.
About 1760, he removed to Exeter township, in Berks County.
In 1774, he was elected sheriff of Berks County, and held
that position for three years.
During the Revolutionary War, he bore a prominent part
in the military affairs of the county; and when Congress
directed the Declaration of Independence to be read publicly
in the several counties of each Providence on July 8, 1776,
he, as the sheriff, performed this distinguished service at
the Court House in Reading.
On Nov. 19, 1789, Daniel Broadhead, as
Surveyor-General of Pennsylvania, appointed him a deputy
surveyor. His sureties were Col. Jacob Morgan
and Col. Nicholas Lotz. His surveys were
numerous and noted for their accuracy. He died at
Reading Feb. 10, 1797, and was buried there.
