AN account of
this noble family, who are earls of Shrewsbury, in
England, will be seen at large in ollins's Peerage of
England, vol. II, p. 398. We shall however subjoin
the following particulars.
CREATIONS.] Earl of the city of Waterford and town of
Wexford, and baron of Dungarvan, July 17, 1447, 24 Henry
VI. regranted and confirmed in 1661, 13 Car. II.
ARM.] Ruby, a lion rampant, within a bordure ingrailed,
topaz.
CREST.] On a chapeau, ruby, turned up ermine, a lion
with his tail extended, topaz.
SUPPORTERS.] Two talbots, pearl.
MOTTO.] Prest d' accomplir.
FORBES,
Earl of GRANARD.
THIS family
were first called Boyes, and for their good
services to the crown of Scotland, got fundry lands in
the Mearns, by the gift of king Robert Bruce; and
from killing a bear which infested the country, they
were called Forbes, and assumed the coat armour
they now bear, with a grant of lands of Forbes,
in the shire of Aberdeen, from Alexander II.
Alexander Forbes adhering to king John Baliol,
against Edward I. of England, in 1303, gallantly
defended the castle of Urquhart, but Edward at
length taking it from storm, put him and his whole
garrison to the sword. His wife being

CREATIONS.] Baron Fitz-William of Liffar, or
Lifford, in the county of Donegal, December 1, 1620, 18
James I. viscount Miltown, in the County of
Westmeath, and earl of Fitz-William, in the
county of Westmeath, and earl Fitz-William, of
the county of Tyrone, July 21, 1716, 2 George II.
ARMS.] Lozengy, pearl and ruby.
CREST.] In a ducal coronet, topaz, a plume of five
feathers triple plumed, pearl.
SUPPORTERS.] Two savages, proper, wreathed about their

all proper.
