     The first Temperance Society in Manchester was organized in 1856, with thirty members.  Dr. Robbins, Secretary.
     The first Aid Society of the M. E. Church was organized Aug. 24, 1863, at the house of Mr. H. Houghton.  Officers elected as follows:  President, Mrs. A. G. Bailey; Vice President, Mrs. E. E. Jeffries; Managers, Mrs. M. G. Houghton, Mrs. H. Freelove; Secretary and Treasurer, Sarah J. Nethaway.
