Jacob Oaks.
The farmers and stock-raisers of Piatt County have been important
agents in promoting its growth. Our subject belongs to this
class and is busily engaged at his calling in Cerro Gordo Township,
where he owns a farm on section 8. He is a native of
Montgomery County, Ohio, born Jan. 7, 1847, and is a son of
Daniel and Lydia (Kuns) Oaks, natives of Ohio. They were
the parents of twelve children of whom these eight are living: Parthena,
wife of Samuel Early, of Missouri; Jacob; Lewis, a
resident of Indiana; Mary, wife of Andrew S. Metzger;
Lizzie, wife of Peter Zink, of Missouri; Phoebe; Ann
and Nancy. The paternal ancestors of our subject were
Germans, as were his mother's people.
When Jacob was fifteen years old he came with
his parents and other members of the family to Piatt County.
They first lived for a short time south of Cerro Gordo and the
parents spent several years in Macoupin and Moultrie Counties.
They finally removed to Missouri where they now reside, both well
advanced in years. When our subject came to this State in his
boyhood it was still in the hands of the pioneer and he saw much of
their early life and did much hard work in his younger days.
He received his education in the public schools of Macoupin County.
In early manhood he married and established a home of his own,
taking unto himself a wife in the person of Miss Hannah Kuns,
Dec. 24, 1871. Mrs. Oaks is also a native of Indiana
where she was born Mar. 18, 1852. She is a daughter of
Lewis and Catherine Kuns, well-known residents of Willow Branch
Township, of whom further mention is made in this volume in the
biography of Jacob Wise. Five of the seven children
born to Mr. and Mrs. Oaks are living, namely: David C.,
Catherine, Lewis D., John S. and Sanford E. Those
deceased are Alvin J. and Jacob.
Since he began his independent career as a farmer
Mr. Oaks has developed and improved a farm of one hundred and
sixty acres in Cerro Gordo Township, which compares favorably in
every particular with those in its neighborhood. In carrying
on his operations he has been thrifty, prudent and wisely economical
and his displayed sagacity and due discrimination in all things.
He is well-known for his strict honestly in business affairs and no
one is more trusted in money matters than he. He and his wife
are members of the old German Baptist Church and he is one of the
Trustees of the church property. They lead true Christian
lives and hold a warm place in the hearts of those about them.
