ABSTRACTS OF WILLS
from The First 131 Wills of Jefferson County, Kentucky
(Then Virginia)
Sept. 1783 to June, 1813

Abbreviations and explanations:
"a", with numerals, means acres;
"dau" means daughter;
"sis" means sister;
"bro" means brother;
"mar" means married
The first date is that of the making of the will, the second that of the probating.
The family or surname, is omitted when the same is that of the testator, but any mention of heirs, etc., or property not in Jefferson County is given - otherwise all properties and persons were in the said county. 
Residents of Louisville are so given, if given in the will.
Kentucky was originally part of the Fincastle County, Virginia.  In 1790 the area was Kentucky County, Va., and shortly afterwards as Kentucky Territory it had three counties, Jefferson (Louisville, C. H.), Lincoln and Fayette

three youngest children mentioned.

father & mother, Robt. & Isabella Lemen to have land on Brashears Ck, 220 acres;
bro. & sis., John, Samuel, Lucy Newland, Isabella Cox, & niece Jean Stevenson to have 2 lbs. each.
Executor: Jacob Newland, my bro. in-law.
72.  LACASSAGNE, Michael, of Louisville; July 9, 1796 Oct. 19, 1797, Nov. 8, 1797
Authorizes Eli Williams, of Hagerstown, Maryland, to sell 4000 acres on Bear Creek, branch of Green River, 2000 acres on Bacon Creek, 300 acres in Bourbon County; to Robert K. Moore, in trust, for use of Mrs. Elizabeth McClelland," for my two mulatto children, to be taught to read and write and to receive their freedom at age of 25," and two lots in Louisville;
also to Robert K. Moore, 600 acres in Illinois grant;
to John Walker, Sr., 500 acres in Illinois grant, should he die, the government then to use the land to educate children of poor parents;
to James Beauvais, 200 acres in the Illinois grant; to sister Jenny Lacassagne of the Republic of France, 500 acres in the Illinois grant;
to James Cox of the Western Territory, 200 acres in the Illinois grant;
to Cornellius Beatty, of Lexington, 200 acres in the Illinois grant;
to Robert K. Moore, house and lots in Louisville;
to Charles Clark (negro) 100 acres in the Illinois grant;
to Stephen Ormsby, watch which he gave me, and library;
to Mrs. Eliz. McClelland, 50 pounds.
After debts paid, all moneys to go to Robert K. Moore, James Beauvais, John Thurston, sister, and Ben Sebastian. 
Executors to send to John Holkes, picture of him "I now have."
Directs that he be buried in Richmond, and a well-built brick house be erected over his grave, if he does not die too far away from Richmond to make the burial requests impossible. (Does not state but probably refers to Richmond, Virginia.)
Executors: Stephen Ormsby, Robert K. Moore, Cornelius Beatty, St. James Beauvais, John Thruston, John Thompson, Ben Sebastian, Walter Warfield.
Witnesses: Knox County (Indiana), October 19, 1797.  Will proven by oath of Henry Vanderburgh, Esq., Judge of Probate, Henry Hurst, G. W. Johnston and Robert Buntell,  Signed by Henry Vanderburgh: above is a true copy of will. Certified copy recorded in Jefferson County, November 8, 1797.  Worden Pope.

To wife Julianna, 70 acres bought by me and my father from Wm. Pope, on waters of Linn's Pond; to sons John, Daniel, Samuel, Peter, David, 1500 acres on Kentucky River, located by John Reed; mentions unborn child, and schooling of children.
Executors: Wife, Julianna and father, Christian Leatherman.

To father Robert and to mother Isabella Lemen, 224 acres on Brashears Creek;
to brothers and sisters John, Samuel, Lucy Newland, Isabella Cox and niece Jean Stevenson two pounds each.

74½.  LINN, William of Kentucky Co., Va. July 18, 1780 Apr. 3, 1781, Aug. 2, 1796
Wife Letitia;
to youngest daughter Ann, plantation "where I live";
to oldest son William 1000 acres below mouth of Miami;
to son Asael (Asabel) 300 acres and one-third of Blue Lick;
to son Benjamin 1000 acres adjoining his brother William;
to daughters Theodotia Linn and Luoruania (Lavina Anna?) Linn 1000 acres adjoining their brothers;
if the daughters "return from the Indians to have this land, if they do not return, land to be divided among my sons"; to daughter Rachel Inn, 600 acres on Harrod's Creek; to her children, John and Josey Linn, "born since I left home," 5 shillings each. 
To four friends, James and Ben Earickson, James and Samuel Kirby, 1200 acres below the mouth of the Miami.
